Washington Park 7Whenever we have out-of-town guests, we try not to miss a quick driving trip through Washington Park in Anacortes.  This 220-acre wooded park features a variety of activities, scenic outlooks and trails.

Located at the western point of Anacortes, near the Washington State Ferry Terminal, it’s a terrific place to take a slow drive through the forest and along the water’s edge of Puget Sound.  This 2.2 mile road offers pullouts along the drive for you to stop and take in the San Juan ferry Washington Park 8coming and going from Anacortes.  You can see several of the San Juan Islands, and some people do see orca pods along the way.

The winding road has many walkers on it, so be careful and on the lookout for them.  They don’t like to be rushed!

Washington Park 13As you meander through the windy forest road, you end up at the top of the park, featuring an incredible vista. There are parking spaces and a portable restroom, and space to roam.  Be sure to keep kids close by, as the vista has a steep drop-off if you go too far!Washington Park 16

There are plenty of services for all from campers to boaters – overnight camping for 68 campsites, day use areas, launch ramp, parking, RV dump station, picnic tables and three covered picnic areas.

See the notches in the large stump in the picture?  This is where loggers called ‘fallers’ placed their feet so they could saw down the old growth trees about 100 years ago.

Have someone who has difficulty leaving the car?  This drive is a perfect solution, enabling everyone to take in the beauty of Puget Sound.
