Today’s tip is to take a drive to Mount Erie, a mountain on Fidalgo Island in Skagit County, and just south of Anacortes.  Towering at 1,273 feet, it is the highest point on Fidalgo Island but still probably one of Anacortes’ best kept secrets.

PLACES-MntErie-viewIt really is just minutes south of downtown Anacortes, and there is a paved road all the way to the top with ample parking.  At the top, two separate panoramic viewing stations are available, one facing southwest and the other to the southeast.  On a clear day, the southwest view extends without obstruction over Whidbey Island and across to the Olympic Peninsula and San Juan Islands.  There are also various lookout points along the road up to the top – all with spectacular views.

Mount Erie is at Ray Auld Drive and Heart Lake Road.  Plenty of trails are available, and you may encounter climbers.  Use caution driving up and down the road, as there are many walkers, joggers and bikes up and down the road.

While the drive is windy, it is paved and accessible to just about any vehicle.  People of any age will enjoy this beautiful spot.

PLACES-MntErie-ladiesWe most recently brought my mom and aunt there.  It was a spectacular view, and they were most surprised by the view once they got to the top.  It doesn’t seem like you’ve gone so far up when you see the views.  It also is surprising when you are back down off the mountain and headed to or from Deception Pass, and you see how high up you were!

Mount Erie is owned and operated by the City of Anacortes, and is designated as community forest land.

For more information, refer to the City of Anacortes Parks website, or if you’re a climber, visit WashingtonClimbers.org.

Safe and happy travels!
